Chapter 20

At the end of another long day at the salon, Clara changed into her workout gear, her spotted raincoat and pulled on her sneakers. As she locked up, her phone rang and she smiled when she saw who was calling. “Hello Lucas,” she said, revelling in the sound of his voice as he greeted her.

“How was your day?” he asked.

“It was fine, thanks. I’m on my way to the accounting firm actually. I’m going for a walk with Lakshmi.” She threw her keys in her bag and walked towards Rivers & Associates.

“That sounds good.” He stifled a yawn. “Sorry, long day.”

“I hope you’re looking after yourself. Have you been able to play tennis?” He’d been looking forward to playing a game at his old club while he was in the city.

“Not yet. I’ve been tied to my desk.”

She rolled her eyes. He was such a workaholic. “Lucas! You need to pace yourself and make sure you have a break.”

“I know. I just want to do what I can and get back to you.”

She smiled.

“And the accounting firm. Can you see it?” How does it look?” he asked, almost wistfully.

Oh, his affection for his business ran deep. “Fine. Lakshmi is taking care of it for you. I’m here now, can I call you later after my walk?”

“Of course, I’ll look forward to it. Say hi to Lakshmi for me.”

“What about the filing cabinets and the fax machine? Do you want me to put them on so you can check they are managing without you?” she teased.

“Very funny. Love you,” he said.

“Love you, too.”

She ended the call and pulled open the door of the office, and found herself face to face with a man in his late twenties who was dark-haired and very handsome.

But it wasn’t the usual gorgeous accountant who ran the firm.

“Can I help you?” the attractive stranger asked with a grin.

“I’m Clara. I’m looking for Lakshmi.”

His coffee-coloured eyes lit up. “I’m Carlos. I’m filling in for Lucas.”

“Oh, you’re the new accountant.”

Carlos nodded. “It’s so great to meet you. Everyone talks about you here.”

Everyone? Wasn’t there only Lakshmi, or were their clients chatting about her too? She cleared her throat. “How are you settling in?”

“Very well, thanks. It’s a cool town. I love the beach.”

“Hi, Clara.” Lakshmi poked her head around the door, tying her long, silky hair into a messy bun. “Could you please lock up, Carlos?” Lakshmi asked. “And switch off the lights and set the alarm?”

“Of course. Have a good night, Lakshmi.” Carlos gave her a warm smile.

“Thanks,” Lakshmi mumbled, shrugging a backpack over her shoulder. “And remember to jiggle the key to make sure the door is deadlocked,” she reminded him as they left.

“He’s very good-looking!” Clara whispered as they walked.

Lakshmi blushed. “I hadn’t noticed.”

“You hadn’t?”

“Too busy checking his files,” she grumbled. “He’s no Lucas with numbers, that’s for sure.”

Few were. “I thought he was a friend of yours. Lucas said you recommended him.”

“I did.” Lakshmi rolled her eyes. “A friend of the family’s. I thought he was okay, but now I suspect he’s a himbo.
